  3. Larkspur Library Presents: Larkspur's Own David Johnson, Photographer of San Francisco's Fillmore and Ansel Adams' First African American Student

    February 22, 2018, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

David Johnson was the first African-American student in the San Francisco Art Institute’s Photography Department—started by Ansel Adams. Johnson completed the program in 1949 and went on to become a photo documentarian of iconic images of San Francisco’s Fillmore District. As a young G.I. student, Johnson studied not only with Ansel but also with some of the most prominent photographers of the day—Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, and Minor White. David Johnson has always been generous in letting us see the world through his remarkable eyes: raised in the abject poverty of segregated, Jim Crow, sharecropper, rural Florida to the posh world of San Francisco’s Sea Cliff where he arrived and lived at the home of Ansel Adams and, as he has written, was “dropped through the rabbit hole and into the realm of photographic geniuses." Johnson’s photography has always been authentic, open, and sincere. Presented with Jeff Gunderson of the Larkspur Library Board of Trustees.
